Modernize the Los Angeles International Airport

LAX is California’s busiest airport with approximately 60 million annual passengers.   Each daily international flight generates more than $700 million for our region’s economy and supports 3,000 local jobs over the course of the year.  Unfortunately, LAX is losing market share to airports in San Francisco, Phoenix and even Las Vegas.  Every flight that moves out of LAX translates into lost jobs and commerce here in Los Angeles.

The Chamber is a strong advocate for modernizing outdated passenger terminals, improving runway safety and strengthening the airport’s operation efficiency in order to keep the planes coming.

  • Support Fixing LAX’s North Airfield.  The Chamber supports building greater separation between the two runways on the airport’s north side in order to improve safety and operation.  By moving the northernmost runway an addition 340 feet north, LAX will help prevent a deadly runway collision between two aircraft.  In addition, greater separation will make landings and takeoffs more efficient thereby reducing passenger time spent taxing or idling.

Recent successes include:

  • Tom Bradley Terminal Modernization & Expansion.  Already underway, LAX is moving forward on a $2.4 billion project to provide a first class international passenger experience.  The existing international terminal is undergoing a full modernization and a brand-new terminal (Bradley West) is being constructed next door.   New gates and passenger amenities will accommodate the next generation of larger, quieter and more environmentally-friendly aircraft.
